• What is #Writeadvice?

    • #Writeadvice is a free service for all THEi students that offers one-to-one advice for those who wish to improve their writing skills and write better assignments. Our tutors are experienced full-time English teachers, Chatteris Project Coordinators and purpose-trained full-time students with high English proficiency. Our goal is to help you improve your writing skills through consultation sessions that help you plan your assignments, organize ideas effectively and tackle grammar and vocabulary problems.
  • Can a visit to #Writeadvice guarantee that my assignment is free of errors?

    • #Writeadvice is not a proofreading service and we are not responsible for correcting every mistake in your assignment. At #Writeadvice, tutors do not edit your assignments. Instead, you practise how to edit your own writing.  You learn how to write more accurately by being offered advice tailored to your needs. You also learn how to utilize different kinds of resources including dictionaries, corpora, grammar books, etc. to use English more effectively in your assignments. At #Writeadvice, you are encouraged to raise questions on general grammar rules and vocabulary use. After each consultation session, you are expected to continue improving your assignment and you are always welcome to return for subsequent visits any time you need extra help.
  • What assignments can I bring to #Writeadvice?

    • You can bring along any course assignments written in English to #Writeadvice. You can also consult us on the writing of resumes and cover letters for job application, portfolios, blog entries, personal letters, and any other English texts.
  • When should I come to #Writeadvice?

    • We recommend you to come as early as you can during the writing process, so as to make the most of our service. You can come with an outline or a rough draft to seek advice on how to plan the contents and how to organize the ideas in your assignment. Or you can come in with a complete draft to consult us on the relevance of the content, or on grammar and vocabulary issues. Paying an early visit to #Writeadvice also enables sufficient time for you to revise and edit your drafts and you may arrange subsequent appointments if necessary.
  • How frequently should I come?

    • We recommend you to visit #Writeadvice 2-3 times for each assignment because one session may not be sufficient for us to cover all the problems in your writing. You may schedule more or fewer visits depending on your needs and schedule. The only restriction is that you are allowed to book at most 2 consultation sessions per day so that other students can also use our service.
  • How do I prepare for a visit to #Writeadvice?

    • Before your visit to #Writeadvice, go through your latest draft again and formulate questions you may wish to ask during the consultation session. We recommend you to prioritize your questions according to the consultation focus you’ve indicated (i.e. plan the assignment/ learn to organize ideas effectively/ tackle grammar and vocabulary problems). You are also encouraged to participate actively in the discussion during the consultation instead of waiting passively for the tutor to give you answers.
  • What else can I do to improve my English?

    • You can check out the Writing Help section in our website for a list of useful grammar resources, writing exercises and an online database of common errors extracted from students’ writing. Our Book & Film Review corner gives you access to a wide range of interesting books and movies to enhance your English proficiency. You can also participate in a variety of English enhancement activities and workshops at the Centre for Learning Enhancement (CLE) to improve both your social and academic English. Please stay tuned to our website for upcoming workshops, reading club activities, and more.
